We believe that music theory is an important component in developing as a musician. Students are required to take Music Theory to compliment their instrument lessons. Students must maintain good standing in their Theory class in order to continue instrument lessons. New students with no previous music background are required to take music theory only for their first semester before adding private music lessons to their program. We offer private music lessons in the following: |
As a student of the School, you will be enrolled in a theory class at all times as an integral part of your musical studies. Music theory is presented in age-appropriate classes with consideration for a student’s mastery of the subject matter. New students who have little or no previous musical training will be enrolled in the beginning level theory class, according to age. In beginning theory classes you will learn the foundation of music notation, observe at least three private lessons, and receive a basic introduction to playing keyboard, wind, and string instruments. After one term and upon passing the final exam, you will be assigned to a private or group lesson in the instrument of your choice. Students with previous musical training may take a placement exam to be placed in a higher level theory class and may take an audition to qualify for private or group lessons during their first term. |
Upon passing the final exam at the end of your first term, you will be asked to choose an instrument to study. Once you have selected an instrument, if you are taking private lessons, you will be contacted by your instructor to arrange a weekly lesson time. Please note that for children, all instrument lessons are private one-on-one sessions of fifteen to thirty minutes, depending on the age of the child. For adults, 30- minute private lessons are offered in traditional string, brass, percussion, and woodwind instruments. Beginning group lessons are offered in guitar, piano, and voice. (Please see page 8 for a schedule of group lessons.) Adults studying in these areas are eligible for private lessons based on ability and at the discretion of the instructor. As a returning student, you will either resume your group lessons at the beginning of each session or you will be contacted by your instructor at the beginning of the session to schedule your private lessons. Returning students who wish to switch to a different instrument may do so at the time of pre-registration. |
Ensembles meet weekly for a fifty-five minute session where members become familiar with the skills needed to perform with other musicians. All children who are studying violin must also be enrolled in either the Children’s Beginning String Class or the Intermediate String Class. For more advanced students, the School also offers Advanced String Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Flute Ensemble, and Percussion Ensemble. Students gain entry into the various ensembles via teacher recommendation after receiving a certain level of proficiency on their instrument. |
Voice students at all levels are required to join the choir. The choir is also open to all students of the School and members of the community at large. Singing in the choir provides an additional opportunity to practice music theory concepts such as sight-reading and harmony, as well as an opportunity for musical expression. |
