Youth Program

The People's Music School is one of the only free community music schools in the U.S. As a student of the School, your child will receive a comprehensive musical education on the instrument of their choice, with a heavy emphasis on music theory.

The People's Music School believes that the study of music theory provides an essential foundation for musical development. Therefore, all students of the School are enrolled in a theory class at all times. Music theory is presented in age-appropriate classes with consideration for a student’s mastery of the subject. New students who have little or no previous musical training will be enrolled in beginning level theory class according to age. In beginning theory classes, students learn the basics of music notation, aural skills, and rudimentary theory. After one semester, and upon passing the mid-term exam, students are assigned to a private or group lesson in the instrument of their choice. Students with previous musical training may take a placement exam to be placed in a higher level theory class and may then qualify for private or group lessons during their first term.

In addition to classes and lessons, you will also have numerous opportunities to perform, whether it be as soloists or as members of one of our exciting musical ensembles. Our students also often have the opportunity to learn from established and highly-regarded visiting professional musicians and to attend the various concerts hosted by the School featuring Chicago's premier musicians—all completely free of charge.

New Student Registration for the 2011-2012 school year will take place in late August 2011. Available openings will be limited. Please check back for more information in early August 2011 for the exact number of available spaces. As always, registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.
