Help Support Free Music Education in Chicago with The People's Music School

Uptown Academy

Uptown Academy | The People's Music SchoolAt the Uptown Academy we want students to strive for musical excellence, make new friends, and learn to love music. Our faculty members are fully qualified, professional musicians and music educators who are dedicated to helping your child’s musical development. We provide a safe and nurturing environment so that your child can reach their highest musical potential.

All Uptown Academy students are enrolled in a theory class each semester. In these classes, students learn how to read, write, and compose music while developing their musical ear. Music theory is presented in age-appropriate classes with consideration for a student's mastery of the subject.

Our students also take group or private lessons on an instrument of their choice. Instruction is currently offered for a wide variety of instruments including piano, percussion, guitar, voice, violin, viola, cello, harp, flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, and French horn. Whether your child has had little to no previous musical training or several years studying an instrument, we have classes and instructors that can support his or her musical interests.

In addition to theory classes and lessons, the Uptown Academy places emphasis on attending and participating in performances. Our students have numerous opportunities to perform as a member of one of our many ensembles. With 17 performing ensembles including choir, orchestra, jazz ensemble, percussion ensemble, and flute choir, there is always a chance for our students to showcase their talent. Students also attend special on-site performances given by Chicago's premier musicians, and are often given free tickets to attend concerts with their families throughout the city.

Our enthusiastic students, incredible parent volunteers, talented faculty, and dedicated staff are all important parts of what make the Uptown Academy a unique musical community. Please read our Uptown Academy FAQs to learn more about how you can get your child involved in our FREE music programs.
